European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial news:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
