New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
