Seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
