Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
