Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
